The structure of the building is made from rigid steel which at the time was still a relatively new innovation. The first high-rise building in America was located in Chicago, Il and was the Home Insurance Building. It was completed in 1885, four years before New York got its first steel building in 1889. These new types of buildings had only been around for 29 years, so it was significant that Lexington was able to have a steel skyscraper.
