Rear elevation, Gray Construction

Gray Construction designed their own renovations while working with historians to preserve important architectural features and create a successful adaptive reuse project. The Main Street and Quality Street elevations were not changed, preserving the modernist presence the building had on the street. The major alterations to the building are on the interior and rear elevation. Historically, the rear facade only faced several sets of train tracks, including one set that cut into the lot. Because of this the footprint of the building looks as if its corner has been cut. The architects at Gray Construction took this opportunity to create a unique rear facade. The rear of the building has exposed steel beams that seem to “complete” the building while also being representative of the construction company that occupies the space. An orthogonal curtain wall of glass also intersects the severed corner of the rear facade allowing light into the space. A courtyard was also added to the rear of the building. This courtyard became the new threshold and main point of entry to the building for Gray employees
